Share Your Journey to Catholicism

January 25, 2011 - The Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul

Every person has a story.

If you are a Catholic convert/revert we hope you will consider sharing yours.

Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. (Matthew 5:14,15)

The graces God bestows are meant to be shared and we at Why I'm Catholic have a deep felt conviction that the graces given during a conversion/reversion are no different. The beauty of a conversion story is that although it is always deeply personal, many of the struggles and triumphs resonate universally. The simple "Fiat" associated with sharing one's witness takes one's own humble experiences and turns them into a tool for God to work in someone else's life.

    Why I'm Catholic?
I have had bipolar for 20 years. Since the age of 16 I've been on a lot of medications. It really made my life a living hell a lot of the time. But before I was ill, at age 15 I practiced True Devotion to Mary, offering myself to God. I stayed Catholic until age 33. Then I asked for more faith and I became Evangelical bible believer, like baptist sort of. I got more out of that. But now since my trouble has changed into something else, I need the rosary, it's the only thing that helps in times of great trial. So, I continue to pray the rosary and the bible and go to both churches....I was athiest and agnostice for a little while due to other's influences, and still feel agnostic time to time. But it always passes.

Placed in a German Lutheran boarding school at the age of five (I was neither German nor Lutheran), I grew to like the religious discipline and loving guidence of the deaconesses. When I was 13, however, and in public school, I began going to and was eventually confirmed in a Methodist church where many of my friends attended. My agnostic family didn't care what if any religion I adopted, and I was free to explore all spiritual paths. I found Unitarianism interesting in my thirties, but abandoned that as well and became a secular humanist: Let's sit around talking about how "spiritual" we are and how happy we are to be free from dogma and silly rituals. Right.

So there I was a few months ago, in my seventiest year, happy as a clam with my life, when out of the blue...and I mean that quite literally...I decided to learn the Rosary. Then I inquired about RCIA classes, devoured books on Catholicism and found a wonderful church where I feel at home. I have been brought full circle, back to structure, discipline, prayer and a profound desire to serve the Lord. Only this time, I am a member of the Church of the Bible and my faith in that Church is boundless. When I am asked how this happened, I can only say what I honestly believe: God's grace brought me to this place and I am thankful beyond mere words. Thank you, Lord.
